Hands-On Handyman cc. started off as an "all second fit and finishings" company, covering a wide range of domestic repairs, renovations, replacements and installations. At the core we are structural carpentry team, with a vast knowlage of building frames and making things fit. We build  kitchens, wardrobes, ceilings, wooden floors and dry walling. Basically anything that involves a wooden or metal frame. We found a gap in the market five years ago regarding replacing spent roof timbers, loft conversions and water proofing and have now set up Roof Renovators which have been fixing and modifying roofs ongoingly since then. We also provide guarantees on our workmanship. Hands-On Handyman cc. draws from a large knowledge base, especialy in metalwork and carpentry repairs. We do free quotes in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg.

 We specialized in:
Repair and replacement of all types of roofing timbers, roof tiles and zinc sheetings. Waterproofing problem areas on most types of roof.  Gutters, fascias, flashings and seals. We construct patios, pergolas, sky lights, carports and other beautiful areas to relax in. For conversions or renovations, we also offer tiling, decking, and bespoke work.
With us you get a professional tradesman on the job with an experienced full time crew.

The roof:
Most people forget that a roof is a hugely organic structure that has a life span, thus requiring periodic carpentry, sheeting or tiling, combined with building and waterproofing. Roofs need to breath and are barriers between us and everything above, including storms, dust and extreme tempreture variations. Roofs need to have an ample drainage gradient, so that water runs off them with as little resistance as possiable. We have found that most roof problems relate directly to either decay or shoddy workmanship. At times, we forget about our roofs until we see something hanging off them, or a nasty watermark appears on a ceiling board. Unfortunatly due to the organic materials used in roof construction, most roof timbers are slowly on their way out. Roof timbers are almost always made from pine, and pine wood has a life span of roughly 65 years when covered and down to 10 years when exposed to sun and rain.

  Roof coverings:
We build "lean to" single sided roofs from scratch to extend garages, cover patio extensions or shut gaps at the back of houses. A major amount of our work is removing old roof coverings (corrugated or galvanized metal sheeting) and replacing like for like with new sheetings and flashing surrounds. We also work well with tiles on unusual shaped roofs that wrap non-right angle junctions. For patios and sun rooms we use clear polycarbonate sheeting which have UV protection and are far more resistant to hail than the fibreglass equivalent. The roof coverings we work with include IBR & Corrugated (zinc) sheeting, polycarb, bix six, clear fibre glass, cement tile, clay and Harvey pressed metal tiles.  For slate, cement slab and thatched roofs we recommend that you contact a specialist dealing with that specific type of roofing.

Waterproofing:
We always strive to use stiff or resilient materials to repair  roofs back to their original state before over coating with waterproofers. We waterproof on IBR, Corrugated, Cement tile, Harvey and Clay Roofs. We tend to mostly use bitumen based waterproofers that we "torch-on" with gas and flame and then overcoat with fibre re-enforced, UV protective top coats.

Sourcing materials new and old:
Because we know the supliers and the salvage yards, we almost always make a plan to get you the right replacement tiles. Many clay roof tiles, especially in the Linden, Saxonwold and "older" Sandton areas are no longer manufactured (some, perhaps for as long as fourty years).   We use the best materials and techniques for each individual job. This is important because a roof is load bearing, and we need to ensure that the roof (where we have done repairs) is suitably strong enough to carry the weight of the tiles and service personnel in the future.

Repair types:
Replacement of Gutters, Down pipes, Flashings, Fascia boards, Barge boards, Roof nails and Ridge tiles.
IBR and Corrugated galvanised sheetings, Rafters, Trusses and Tile baton brenderings.
All types of Roof leaks, Waterproofing with Bitumen and Acrylic based Seals and Sealers, conversions and renovations.

We also erect carports, lean-to roofs, green houses, polycarb roofs, wooden decking, pergolas, skylights and balustrades.
